Using the Cartoons
If you want to use any of my cartoons in a publication or a presentation (or for any other purpose) here's what you need to do.
To use any cartoon from these pages all you need to do is to pay a fee for the right to reproduce it (The cartoons can only be used free of charge for certain charity or educational use). The amount that you have to pay to use a cartoon depends on the type of use to which it's going to be put. The categories and prices are explained below.
The prices are usually for the rights to use a cartoon once, such as in one publication. When used in PowerPoint or similar presentations the rights allow the cartoon to be shown to a specific number of people (not necessarily in a single presentation). Purchasing the rights to use a cartoon unfortunately doesn't entitle you to use it indiscriminately for ever. If you want to use an image several times in different ways, you have to pay separately for each use. Sorry.
If in doubt about anything, such as if you're not sure which category your intended use fits into, please feel free to contact me.
How to Pay
From the table below select the category of use and the relevant details (such as the size of the print run or the duration of use).
If you're not sure which category your use fits into, please contact me.
There are several ways in which you can pay. Again, if in doubt, please get in touch.
Pay using PayPal
Payment can be made using the PayPal internet payment system.
To do this, enter a reference for the cartoon that you want to use.
On my newer web pages (the ones that have the same colour scheme as this page) the reference is a number that can be found on the page displaying the cartoon, beneath the cartoon.
On my older pages (the yellow ones, with cartoony buttons) that have no reference number, please use the same panel to describe the cartoon in up to 60 letters instead (or use the end of the web page's address as the reference - that's the text between the final slash and the .html in the bar at the top of the page, as in /use-this-part.html).
Then click the Add to Cart button below. This will open a PayPal page for the particular fee that you have chosen.
On the PayPal page you need to enter your credit card details. You don't need a PayPal account in order to do this (If you haven't got an account, ignore the "Log on to PayPal" panel and instead click the "continue" button beneath the words "Don't have a PayPal account").
When the transaction has been made a high resolution copy of the cartoon will be sent to you, usually within 24 hours.
Pay by Cheque
Alternatively, you can pay by cheque.
Simply contact me with details of the cartoon that you're interested in and of the use to which you want to put it. I'll send you the cartoon as a high resolution file, and you send me the cheque. Easy!

Free Use:
My cartoons can be used free of charge by students as part of course work or in leaflets and newsletters that are circulated within a school or college for educational purposes. (Teachers, lecturers and other paid staff have to pay - see Internal Educational Use.)
The cartoons cannot, unfortunately, be used free of charge by campaign groups or by small charities (or branches of large charities that have little or no funding). The reason why, and the special low fees that are required, are detailed in the section below. Large charities that employ staff and that want to use my cartoons in significant publications need to pay using the Public Printed Editorial Use, Non-commercial category, listed above.
The cartoons cannot be displayed free of charge on personal web sites or blogs, for which a small fee is required (see next category for the reason and the fees). If you want to feature the cartoons free of charge on a blog or personal web site you can link directly to the page on this site that features the cartoon by using a reduced version of the cartoon (no more than 150 pixels high) as a link or by using a text link using such wording as: Look at this great cartoon!

Please supply me with details of your proposed use, and the Cartoon Reference Number (or a description of the cartoon if it has no number).
I'll then send you a high resolution copy |
Small Charities and Campaign Groups (and Campaigning Individuals):
Much as I would like to allow free use of my work, especially by good causes, economic realities dictate that I need to charge a small fee for its use.
The reason for this is that a major use of my work is by small charities and campaign groups, so it's largely through the donation of these small fees that I'm able to carry on producing work of the type that you want to use, for the purposes for which you want to use it.
The fee that I charge for the use of my work in this category is very modest - indeed you may think that because it's so low it's hardly worth the effort of paying it. However, as I mentioned, it's thanks to these small fees that I can carry on producing cartoons - if people didn't pay it would mean that eventually I'd have to close down my site. (If on the other hand you think that the fee is large, bear in mind that there's a substantial outlay of time and effort that goes into producing and administering the use of my cartoons.)
This category is specifically for small charities (or small, financially independent sections of large charities) or for small campaign groups or individuals engaged in campaign work on an unpaid basis. By campaign work I mean such activities as environmental campaigns or health campaigns. Campaigns linked to commercial concerns, such as health campaigns linked to diet products, are not included in this category. Campaign groups that promote hatred or that advocate violence are barred. Interest groups such as local social clubs, community groups or leisure interest groups (such as astronomy groups, bird watching groups and such-like) do not fit into this category, and can be found under the Personal Use category, below. Any non-profit organisations that employ paid staff generally need to pay for the cartoons under the Public Printed Editorial Use, Non-commercial, listed above.
Personal Use:
For most personal uses (other than students using my work as part of their studies) you need to pay a small fee (to cover copyright, administration and overheads).
If you think that this sounds a bit mean, please bear in mind that selling my cartoons is how I earn my living, and I have to put a lot of work into it. These small payments make a lot of difference to my income, and without them I'd have to close down my site.
This category includes use by organizations that are staffed by volunteers or unpaid staff, such as local social clubs, community groups or interest groups (such as astronomy groups, bird watching groups and such-like). Any individuals engaged in charity work or campaign work should refer to the Small Charities and Campaign Groups category, listed immediately above.
This category does not allow the cartoons to be reprinted on personal greetings cards.
