The lawn mower in the cartoon is the type with rotary blades that create stripes on the lawn. Here the stripes bend round the obstacle on the lawn. This is part of the humour, because stripy lawns are often thought of as being very neat (to the point of obsessive neatness).

Traditionally it’s the sound of the first cuckoo that heralds the summer, however cuckoos are now becoming rarer. Meanwhile, hay fever is becoming more common, so the sound of a hay fever sneeze is replacing the call of the cuckoo as the harbinger of summer.
