The Problem with Progress – cartoon.
The Law of the Jeopardy of Progress
Cartoon showing the paradox of progress
The Law of the Jeopardy of Progress is the concept that every advance that the human race makes that acts as a cushion against an existing problem simply results in the piling up of cushions, with the consequence being that the human race eventually ends up sitting on the top of a very high and unstable pillar of cushions, with a very long way to fall when the pile inevitably collapses.
For instance, if a method is found to double the food yield of the planet, this does not eradicate starvation, because the resulting period of food stability will initiate a doubling in population to exploit the resource, thus putting us back where we started – except that there are now twice as many people in jeopardy, with the potential consequences being twice as dire and the solution twice as hard.
